    Belfast School Parent Council
    April 15, 2010
    Attendance: 10 parents, 2 administration, 1 teacher

Meeting brought to order at 7:10pm, meeting minutes from March approved and seconded

Teachers report: Student Lead conferences went well and the children were able to show case their work to their families. There is a consideration of continuing these types of conferences next year at the November and March meetings. Matt Zinkens class hosted an assembly of students helping students. Division two students would wear red pinnies and help to resolve conflict on the playground. There would be a problem solving couch were such conflicts could be resolved with a “talk, walk and squawk” approach. To further promote positive relationships the word of the month is “KINDNESS.” This is the last week of swimming. The volunteer tea is being held on May 27, 2010 from 8-10 am so that the teachers are able to participate in the tea. International Dance Day is Thursday April 29, 2010 at 9am. Grade 5 class will be performing a musical on June 4, 2010. This musical was written and submitted by a student in this class. The play will be during the school day. The talent show auditions will be held at 3-4 pm on May 26, 2010 for Division 1, and 3-4pm on May 27, 2010 for Division 2. The talents show itself will be held on June 10, 2010 at 9:30am for Division 1 and 1:00pm for Division 2. The choir will also be having a concert during the school day on June 7, 2010.

Asst prinicipal informs us that there is enough of an interest to run a milk program, Participation is not mandatory. A couple of possibilities are being considered for acquiring a milk fridge. The approx. cost of the program is $11.00 per month and would provide 16 units of milk per child. The children of Belfast really enjoyed the “Running Man” and would now like to raise monies to support his charity “the right to play” by hosting a play day. Each class would choose their own event and invite loved ones to come and play with them while making a donation to the charity, dates and times to be announced. An application has been submitted for an “AFA” grant which would allow the school to hire more artists in residence. As well we are still waiting to hear back from a $2500.00 Music Money grant. On May 3, 2010 at 10:00am the students will be participating is” Music Monday” to support the work in the Arts.

Prinicipal tells us that the new Admin. Secretary is in the office and settling in, a big thank you to the lunch room staff for filling in before she could join us. We will need 2 parents to join the grades 5/6 during the day to supplement supervision during their camp week at Camp Chief Hector. Provincial achievement exams annual scores will be posted in the September news letter. The children in grades 3 and 6 who write theses exams will have their results sent home with them in September as well. The May newsletter will post the times of the exams. 2 teachers attended a technologies conference and reported back to administration that Belfast School is on the leading edge. Monday May 3, 2010 Lifetouch photography will be in the school taking class pictures as well as individual spring pictures. The last week of school is June 21-25, 2010. Wednesday June 23, 2010 is Summer Fest being held in the AM the school caretaker will be buying a pizza lunch for the entire school.

Friday June 25, 2010 at 9:15am a farewell assembly for the grade 6’s will be held. Monday June 28, 2010 is appeals day, no classes this day. The enrollment for next year looks good, 30 kindergarten registered and 6-8 students transferring to Belfast in September. Administration would like to know if the Belfast Parent Council will pay for the Agenda for the 2010-2011 school years. Field trip fees cover just the cost of the field trip and nothing more. The new traffic signs are up! The loading zone is for brief parking periods up to a maximum of 5 minutes. We are still having concerns about Parents who continue to drop their children off in the middle of the road and Parents who park on the wrong side of the road to let their children out.

Lunch room: A final break down of the finances will be done at the end of the year. We have a great group of ladies who operate the lunch program and they “ROCK.”
A lunch time switch is being considered. Play first, eat second. Administration is considering this option as well as others and will ask the children how they would like the lunch time to be structured.
Anniversary Celebration: 80th Anniversary of the Old Building and 50th Anniversary of this School site. May 29, 2010 11-2pm an informal gathering is set to take place for Alumni and current students. Food for 300 may be supplied by Co-op, a continuous power point presentation, a 1969 choir performance that CHQR radio recorded and a possible performance by our division 1 and division 2 choirs are some of the activities to take place at this event. If you would like to help out please contact the school to be connected with committee members.

Casino: Still searching for back up volunteers, anyone who could be available in the event someone is unable to fulfill their time commitment. These back up volunteers can be friends, neighbors, family members.

Key Communicator: Dave Hancock of the provincial treasury board has agreed to pay teachers for this year’s budget short fall. A meeting hosted by the CBE regarding the branding of the Calgary board of Education was held. Focus groups discussed ideas regarding a new logo. Upcoming meeting dates: Monday April 19, 2010 area meeting with Susan Church – personal digital devices and their role in the school. Wednesday April 21, 2010 CAPS meeting – Special education for the province. Anyone with Special needs education concerns is welcome to attend this meeting.

Treasurer: In September; we need a new treasurer. Quick book knowledge would be an asset in this position. An official resignation letter should be submitted so we can elect a new treasurer when the time comes. Our balance as of April is $3288.83

A motion to purchase a 2 year School Council Membership was made and motion accepted.
A decision to drop the Simple Simon Fundraiser in favor the Spell-a-thon was made.

Motions that the Belfast Parents School Council spend up to a maximum of $2500.00 for the upcoming school year agendas, 2nd – motion accepted

Benches for the playground have arrived. Upon clarification regarding the placement of the benches we now know that they only need to cement into the ground and no border is needed. A call to Alberta 1st call is needed before we can go ahead with the placement of the benches. a motion to pay up to $100.00 for the power auger and cement needed to place the benches properly, 2nd – motion accepted.

New volunteer will be doing the STUP books in September

The fun lunch coordinator has returned to full time work, therefore the Subway fun lunch that had been scheduled is going to be cancelled.

The day before our Parent council meetings a notice should be sent home with the children.

Spruce Meadows “Show your spirit” is June 12 and 13, 2010. This fundraiser is an opportunity to raise a lot of money for our school. Administration will meet with a parent volunteer to discuss our involvement in this event.

Production meetings have not been set or scheduled at this time.

    Belfast School Parent Council

    March 18, 2010 meeting minutes

    Attendance:20 parents, 1 administration, 2 teachers

Meeting called to order at 7:18pm

    Principles report:
The newsletter will be going out tomorrow March 19, 2010. Our schools administration secretary has taken a job at a school closer to her home and will be leaving us as of March 19, 2010, we are sorry to see her go. Filling in for her for the next week will be our 3 lunch supervisors, after we return from Spring Break we will be welcoming the new Admin Secretary.

There are currently no staff changes that we are aware of. If this changes Administration will inform the parent council.

Projections for the coming year were 213, as of now we have 221 students. A large sign up for the Kindergarten program has occurred as Mayland Heights Elementary is not running a Kindergarten program next year.
The middle school program is going to go ahead as projected at Sir John Franklin, and will draw its student base from all areas North of the Bow.

Jump rope for Heart was a big success and raised over $3000.00

A very successful Lock Down practice took place this week. The meeting place in the event of an emergency is the Crossroads Community Centre.

Monday March 22, 2010 is the student lead conferences. Students will be able to show parents their learning achievements and share their accomplishments as well as set new learning goals for the remainder of the school year. The schools goals have focused on reading and personalized learning for each child, (multiple intelligence)

Your help is needed to guide the children of Belfast Elementary in understanding that the whole idea of “Boyfriend/Girlfriend” has no place in an Elementary school. This type of thing at this age means exclusion and causes upset within the classroom. Please remind your child that this type of behavior is not appropriate.

New library books courtesy of the Chapters Indigo book grant in the amount of $33,000.00 was spent this year and will be spent again next year and the year after.

Production: A new form of production for the upcoming year. Students will write their own play and their own music with the help of next year’s Artist in Residence. This will make next years production a true Belfast Elementary School production. Fine Arts Teacher is going to choose the role she wishes to take as she is ready to try something new. A production meeting may need to take place one evening to alleviate some questions and concerns.

We are hoping for 3 artists in Residence next year, 2 of which would help with the production and the third to come after the winter break.

Lunchroom: All is running well with the lunch room. A major review at the end of the year to see where we stand will be looked at.

Park Benches: Approved and ordered. The benches are set to arrive at the end of March. At that time a work group will have to be organized to install the benches.
Casino: (8) back up positions are still required to be filled. A memo will have to go out with the March newsletter or a mass e-mail should be sent out.

Key Communicator: System meeting (whole board). Trustees spoke about the role of the board, city budget over $1 billion dollars. 12 new schools scheduled to be built, 6 new elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 senior high school. Budget issue re: staffing, the province regulates teacher salaries using a Stats Canada figure. This figure uses the average family weekly earnings to determine salaries. However there was a mistake in the teachers favor and the CBE has to figure out how to pay employees without any lay-offs. Next meeting –April 19, 2010-is an Area 2 meeting with Susan Church, topic will be digital citizenship. Caps meeting next month, CBE branding re: corporate loge and parents impressions of the CBE. We will post the link to this.

Treasures report: $4000.00 in bank right now with no commitments except the benches.

Fun lunches: next fun lunch could be in May, however the fun lunch coordinator went back to work and this position is now vacant. We need a parent to step up and fill this position.

Fun Lunch went well and raised $381.29 Concerns were raised regarding the speed in which the children are getting their hot lunches. The younger children should be getting their meals first and the classes should be arriving at closer intervals. One parent volunteer is required in each lunch room on fun lunch days in order that adequate supervision is maintained if the bell rings and students are still in the school eating. The next fun lunch is scheduled for May and will be a Subway lunch.

Area 2 meeting: Susan Church and 3 trustees attended this meeting. 3 new ideas were brought forward: Personalized learning, making sure every child is able to learn in the classroom they are in. Personal computer devices in the school and how these devices could be integrated in the classroom, e-portfolios from kindergarten through Grade 6 12 including examples of the Childs childs work ,work, reflections from the child on what they did and what they would do differently. Next system meeting is going to be held March 10, CAPSC meeting every month unsure of topic at the upcoming meeting.

The student’s bottle/garage/bake sale was a huge success and raised a total of $1574.19. Winter fest took place this past week and Mother Nature played along with a nice dump of sticky new snow, everyone had a great time.
When the student lead interviews are held in March all students will have had their reading levels retested. Multiple intelligence, goal setting, what is an attainable goal for me (the student). Projections for last year were for 238 children- 223 actually attended. This year projections are set at 213.
